Title: Activate config settings takes 10 min
Post by: MarySME on September 05, 2002, 05:17:30 AM
I have SME setup as a basic file server for my LAN. The box it is installed on has an older 333mhz PII processor, and a faster ATA100 drive. The box works great, but when I need to make a simple IP address and Gateway address change, it takes about 10 min to save the settings. I am having to go this back and forth right now until my ISP problems get sorted out, but 10 min to write to a couple of text files in nuts. (PS it has done this since the start. It is only really bad now because I am having to do it once or twice a day now.)

It's doing a heck of a lot more than just writing a few text files.  It's running perl scripts to reconfigure everything from the DNS settings to the ipchains config.  It's a pretty thorough re-config.  I have a P150 system --- 10 minutes would be  snap for that one ;)

My home "server" (quotes used because there's no actual server-class hardware therein) is a PII/233 w/128 megs RAM and a 30-gig ATA-100 drive.  Not that the motherboard ever heard of ATA-100.  Anyway, I think RAM is more important than raw processor speed ... mine doesn't take anything like 10 minutes to register changes but it does take the server manager left panel about 10 seconds to come up fully and 20-30 seconds for most changes to be registered.  On the plus side ... Netjuke, Gallery and phpBB2 all work great with no noticeable latency.

I've got to agree, before upgrading to a Duron 700 ( from a K6-2 400 ) memory does vastly alter the performance of the server.

I now put a min of 256mb in them.
128mb is workable ( but if you watch the top screen, it really gets used )
