Hi,
i have a smeserver te of this computer.
i want to do a complete backup
Which method do you advice?
then i'll upgrade tp smeserver 10
thanks
-
You really don't want to do so
SME10 is still in early alpha stage, so it must not be used in production

The server manager "backup to workstation" will do it, & select to backup to local USB disk as destination.
This method requires you to configure the same backup job on the sme10 server BEFORE you do a restore..
Also you can do a one off console backup to USB disk. Log in at command line as admin & select backup from the menu, connect the USB only when asked.
You will/should be asked if you want to do a restore near the end of the sme10 install process. DO NOT insert the USB disk until asked or you risk wiping the backup disk & adding it to the hard disk array.
Having said the above please realise that sme 10 is in alpha development & not all things work correctly & may need debugging.
Also there may be security issues.
sme 10 should only be used for testing or in a carefully monitored test/production environment which is NOT mission critical, & then only by an experienced admin.

Alpha = liable to break suddenly without warning and trash all your data. Updates and changed may render it instantly unusable.
Only use for testing and bug reporting

ok
so if i just want to do a total backup of my server and not upgrade to smeserver, which is your advice about the method to use? USB key, remote computer or anything else?,
if i want to use a USB to have a total image of the computer where is installed the SMEServer, how can i dot it?
thanks

Have you searched the wik?
A lot of methods are documented there.
-
i don't understand where must be plugged the USB key to do a total backup.
is it possible to boot on the USB key to restore the server totally
-
The usb is plugged into your server to do a backup.
If you need to restore, first you install a clean server, then when asked 'do you want to restore from backup you plug in your usb.
Please read the manual in the wiki where this is explained.
-
suppose i have done a total backup on a USB key.
suppose my smeserver is unable to boot.
is it possible to reinstall ALL smeserver system and parameters from my USB key?
-
I beg your pardon but.. did you take 5 mins to search the forums, read the documentation, check the wiki?
99.99% of your questions have already an answer
https://wiki.contribs.org/SME_Server:Documentation:Administration_Manual:Chapter10
this is not the first time you're (I'd say kindly) asked to read the documentation.

Please read my post/answer earlier in this thread. It gives you detailed instructions re 2 standard backup & restore methods.
All restores are done to a freshly installed sme server operating system.
You DO NOT do restores to an already configured existing system.
After the restore you must also reinstall any contribs that were previously installed.
Sme server does not have a bare metal backup function to USB disk (ie whole of disk contents).
Note though that a backup to tape does backup all file systems, but a restore from tape does not restore all file systems, only default data & configuration is restored.
Note that sme server does not have a function to create a bootsble USB disk backup.
Please read the Wiki Howto article titled Backup server config (especially section re Backup Concepts towards the end).
If you need to boot a non booting server, you insert the sme server install CD/DVD & do a Rescue boot from that, this is for recovery of data purposes or when attempting to correct the reason the server will not boot, etc.
Note YOU DO NOT DO A RESTORE TO AN EXISTING CONFIGURED INSTALL OF SME SERVER

Find the links at top to Documentation (3 bars on mobiles).
Look at the
Howto
Also look for
Contribs
under another heading
for lots of answers.
eg this one

You need to help yourself as people here will now stop helping you due to your laziness.

sorry, i haven't found the doc on "adding directories"
thanks

Seriously are you joking ?
I gave you the URL link in my last post, all you had to do was click on it.
Look at the heading

Short answer, No
-
i like this kind of response :-P
-
so, i'm going to install my backup on another computer.
what is your advice: backuppc or DAR?
thanks
-
Try both of them, test them, then choose the one you feel more comfortable with
BTW, they are different tools with different aims
-
do you think these solutions are good solutions?
-
yes, they are, but they are for me.
you must test them to understand how they work and to learn using them, then choose the one you prefer.
nowadays setting up $whatever feature is quite easy.. the hard work is to understand how thing are going to work, to fix them if something goes wrong.
and you're talking about backup
I usually use a custom made script to backup my servers.. or duplicity or rsync.. the point is that you have to test and choose the right tool for you for your environment and skills
-
ok! thanks
