Title: recommended mailing list software?
Post by: jurjen on September 13, 2002, 02:53:45 AM
Hi,

I am using e-smith 5.5 and am looking for an easy to use, easy to maintain  mailing list program, to set up 4 or 5 low-traffic mailing lists. People should be able to subscribe and unsubscribe by sending an email to list-request (or something similar). It does not need to have a web interface.

I have found a howto for EZMLM, but after reading these forums it looks like ezmlm is obsolete and does not work well with e-smith 5.5 ??

Thanks,
Jurjen

correction.. I just found e-smith-ezmlm-web-1.1.1-04.noarch.rpm.

It is very recent (02 June 2002) so I suppose I was wrong in thinking that ezmlm is obsolete. I owe Gordon Roswell an apology.

But all I have now is this rpm. Is this all I need or are there dependencies? Where do I go for a setup description?

Thanks,
Jurjen

Hi,

I found Gordon's ezmlm an excellent contribution. The administration through the web interface (integrated into server-manager) makes it easy to setup and maintain the lists (I can say that only after I figured out my misunderstanding with 'moderated lists' :-))

There are a few rpms and all those required rpms are in Gordon's ftp directories (in 'i386' and in 'noarch'!). The installation was straight forward as far as I remember. Sorry, I can't help with more details since I can't find my notes for this in the office....

Hope that helps.

To quote Darrell May from devinfo

First you need to
download the following rpms from Gordon's contrib areas:

[i386]
ezmlm-idx-std-0.40-2.i386.rpm
ezmlm-web-2.1-04.i386.rpm
perl-Ezmlm-0.03.1-1.i386.rpm

[noarch]
e-smith-ezmlm-web-1.1.1-04.noarch.rpm

Then install in this order:

rpm -Uvh ezmlm-idx-std-0.40-2.i386.rpm
rpm -Uvh perl-Ezmlm-0.03.1-1.i386.rpm
rpm -Uvh ezmlm-web-2.1-04.i386.rpm
rpm -Uvh e-smith-ezmlm-web-1.1.1-04.noarch.rpm

Then in the server-manager you will find:

Collaboration - Mailing lists

You will like ezmlm.  I'm using in for a dozen or so big mailing lists that get used quite a bit.  Works great.

Okay, I'm obtuse. ;-)

Where did you find those rpms? I can only find a couple of source rpms by Gordon in the contrib area (http://www.e-smith.org/contrib/rpm-index/RPM_by_contrib_last-Rowell.html) so I need a wee bit a a hint. ;-)

Never mind. ;-)

ftp://ftp.e-smith.net/pub/e-smith/contrib/GordonRowell/RPMS

(Why is always that if you spend an hour looking for something, ask for help, and then look for another minute, you find it yourself?)
