I have put up a discussion about WordPress update options on bugzilla:
https://bugs.contribs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11428
Thoughts there or here gratefully received.

My take is this doesn't need to be a contrib. I accept the argument of not updating wp but that applies to any Web app in an ibay?

Certainly it can be done in an Ibay, but some people may prefer to have an "out of the box" solution, rather than have to install and connect the DB etc.
I am hoping that some of them will comment here.

The point is not everone can do all the additional admin that may be needed. SME is meant to make Linux easy to use, maintain and modify.
Ask yourself how many contribs you use to modify various things in SME?
Then ask yourself why do you use SME and not CentOS 7 minimal and configure it all yourself?
Skill levels vary.....

Agreed SME does what it does brilliantly. and yes I do use a fair few contribs!

So the proposal is that we abandon the Remi and/or Epel WordPress rpms, the Epel one is out of date and the Remi one is up to date, but incompatible with the php-fpw installation that we have in SME10.
Instead we will download and install the "latest" version of WordPress at the moment of installation of smeserver-wordpress and then allow the inplace updates of plugin/templates/translations and the core to occur from then onwards. These can be done manually or automatically.
So I am working on this.
If there are any current users up for a bit of testing, please make contact or post here.

I can test that

Great, I need a few hours to get the rpm together. I'll make contact on Rocketchat when it is ready.
