I used the affa contrib for backups on my 9.2 server. I have now moved to version 10.0 and is wondering how far away is this contrib from being released? Should I look for an alternative backup solution, or is it just around the corner from being ready?
-
When I have time to finish it......
I have had to build other libraries to make it systemd aware.
I have also cleaned up the main script which was messy.
I just need a few days with nothing else to do.
Yes, I know affa is a stand out Contrib. But I am seriously time limited right now. My focus is $ to put food on the table.
Of course if anyone else can help code then please leap in and I'm happy to guide them.
Don't expect everyone else to do it for you. For free, in their own time.
It'll be done when it is done, and that will be sooner if people help.
Remember this is is 'open source'. Not 'free code'.
If you seriously want to get involved then ask me for a login on our Rocket.Chat instance.

Thanks for that update. Good to know there is progress - if it was up to me, it would be even slower (lack of coding experience but I can lift heavy things)
AFFA is my mainstay for looking after servers remotely. Lovely piece of kit that-- and like SME, it just works!
Cheers
Ian

Had you the chance to have a look to backuppc ?
-
Thanks JP - yes I remember some years ago looking at backuppc but I use AFFA for the RISE function.
The SME server I look after is 50 km away in Sydney (COVID Central at the moment).
Having 2 SME boxes (Server and AFFA backup) means I can get the remote system up in 30 minutes or so from my home, then leisurely travel down to fix things (if I can't do so online).
I must admit, I have not done a full restore but I have several times recovered files and folders that had been deleted, just by following the instructions in the AFFA Contrib page.
Sorry, I didn't mean to hijack the OP post. I really just wanted to show appreciation for the work you (and the very few others) have put in.
Cheers
Ian

I agree that Rise is such a killer feature.
I will try and do some more but it might be a few weeks.
I keep tinkering when I have a minute. But also trying to fix phpki.....

I have upgraded several production SME9 to SME10 using AFFA RISE with smedev version smeserver-affa-3.3.1-1.el7.sme.noarch.
As usual you need to reconfigure via the console after rising to reset the network, otherwise no major issues.
If smeserver-bridge-interface is preinstalled before rising it may use the wrong ethernetInterface, need to manually set the correct ethernetInterface, reconfigure and restart.
Preinstalling smeserver-openvpn-s2s + Include=/etc/openvpn/s2s; The site-to-site vpn's reconnect after rising (using SME9 HMAC + cipher).
Most SME9 were workgroup / email / vpn / server-gateway servers.
AFFA SME9 -> SME10
Include=/etc/dehydrated
Include=/etc/nagios/nrpe.cfg
Include=/etc/openvpn/s2s
Include=/var/log/qmail
Include=/var/log/qpsmtpd
Include=/var/log/sqpsmtpd
Exclude=/etc/httpd
Exclude=/etc/e-smith/templates-custom
Exclude=/etc/yum.repos.d
Exclude=/etc/yum.smerepos.d
My sincere thanks to the SME team for making this possible.

FYI that is just the 9 version simply imported to v10.
It includes none of the refactored code and is not systemd aware.
It was never designed to handle upgrades (add a feature request....)
Hence it is in smedev and should be used with EXTREME caution. It is not production ready. It may totally trash your server. Have tested backups ready. You have been warned.
I'll get to this when I can... I have libraries ready to read systemd status/restart services etc. but have a few 'codey' issues I still need to resolve.
I will advise when it is ready to test.

Hello everybody, is there still nothing new from the Affa plugin? An update in the professional area is completely pointless, as long as this plugin can not provide reasonable backup. I can only recommend all to change to the version 10 of the SME if you continue to rely on a reasonable backup software. What a pity...
-
Hello everybody, is there still nothing new from the Affa plugin?
Hmmmm. This is open source. So, what have YOU done about it?
I'm happy to wait for your answer.
-
I advertised the software and its distribution, provided support. I am not a programmer, but can - if required - offer help with translating. And as for my statement before: I said that on this basis - without a proper backup - version 10 cannot be used with a clear conscience. So I stay at 9, where I have an executable backup solution with affa.
-
You cannot use v9 with a 'clear conscience' as it is EOL and it has no support. I hope your 'supported' clients are aware.
V10 can be used, and is used, by many because it is the supported version, unlike v9. It has 'proper' backup solutions. But maybe not the one you want.
You have been aware of this issue for a long time but I haven't seen an offer of help so far.
I'm not a programner either. I just rolled up my sleeves and started to hack. You could do the same.
Please all stop asking when it will be done.
I'll do what I can, when I can, around my normal day job.
If you want it done faster the code is in CVS. Please start work.

So. Lets see who gets involved then.

If you want to really help (and not just try and get free support) then DM me for a Rocket account on my server where we are discussing this now.

Ahhhhhh. Some things never change.

Might be able to help for a few hours a week - I have modified the Affa script to customise (SME 9.2) i.e.
- send email (I see this is added in V3 of Affa
Added parameter to conf to read email and backup job id
Sorry don't understand DM for a Rocket.Chat account.

affa is just about ready to go, just needs people to test and use..then add comments to the Bug
https://bugs.koozali.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11024
I think this needs to be tested as well

Ok I can do so time on testing I starting today to will do some testing so if find and bugs I will record/report.
We have some custom designed scripts that run on Windows using rsync so will test those and well and report bugs via the Bugzilla.

Cool!
Sorry don't understand DM for a Rocket.Chat account.
Send me a DM here or email me - you can find my address via bugzilla - and I will give you a Rocket.Chat account where we talk development. It is easier to discuss things there. We can helpo you set up CVS so you can check the latest code and learn how to build it if you don't know already.

This would be excellent, it was/is the main area left to sort, windows using rsync...

Happy to help I will be testing the Windows Rync to Affa backup over the next couple of days will report bugs and let you know how it goes.
-
We know it backups up.
It's the restore that needs testing.

It's the restore that needs testing.
Windows back software we use has no automated or user controllable options for restoring data, so can't test the windows restore only backup. i.e. we do restores manual when required.
Linux we will be doing a full test restore/migration of a SME 9.2 system later next week will note any bugs found etc.
One minor thing I found on the wiki affa page - the command to install fails
yum install --enablerepo=smecontribs,epel,openfusion smeserver-affa
but this works.
yum install smeserver-affa --enablerepo=smedev,epel,openfusion
