Title: 20 second pauses in authentication? ftp and email
Post by: Theo on September 18, 2002, 09:26:19 AM
My ftp login takes about 20 seconds to authenticate as does my email. I have a sneaking suspicion that this has to do with DNS look ups. Unfortunately, I am a noob and don't know where to go rooting for the answer. Can someone help me figure this out? This is sitting on my home network. It is in server only mode behind a firewall. What other info would be helpful? Everything works, those two services are just taking a long time.

I have followed a bunch of threads via your original thread, and I may try hacking away at a file-which scares crap out of me, but something confuses me. My wife has an imac upstairs and this machine has no problem contacting mail-does it in a flash-while the pc which is a horribly faster machine slogs away waiting for the authentication. Any ideas?

By opening port 113 on my pc's software firewall (only to SME) I was able to repair the problem locally. Is there danger in opening port 113 in my firewall/gateway and pointing it at SME? This way if I wish to ftp from school to grab a file I can.-Theo
