Title: SME11 default webmail
Post by: Jean-Philippe Pialasse on April 11, 2024, 06:07:02 AM
we sticker over the version with Horde because it was there and solid for years.

Seems that the team has left behind the project for a while. Even if they started working on a horde 6 franework recently it is not ready for production and the current framwork 5 was designed for php5, with ability to run for few years on php7 but we are looking now at php 82 and 83 as current.

1- So what was your usage of horde on SME 9 and before?

- none
- just mail
- agenda
- tasks
- memo
- ldap directory
- other

2- what project would you like to see the new default webmail?

Horde is good but not usable as groupware in production, current sme10 version has 2 issues.  1. Event reminders discarded if set to 0 minutes. 2. Event invitations organiser changes to recipient email address and resends invites to all attendees from new organiser email address. Nextcloud snappymail and groupware is good but not everyone will use nextcloud. Still use Horde webmail on mobile phone instead of setting up a mailbox.

also use Horde sieve a lot

Personally we do not use webmail - no one likes it - except for odd emergencies when it is handy to see what is actually on the server instead of what the mail client thinks it has in its cache.

We use Nextcloud or Corebos for all our Calendars/Contacts so all we really need is a good basic webmail and not fussed about which one it is.

So 'Just mail' is about it.

May I suggest SOGo?

it's actively developed, and there's already a contrib to integrate it in SME
I widely used it since... well, more than 10 years, in small environments (less than 10 users) and in medium/big ones (300 users, most of the time more than 170 connected at the same time on a VM with 12 Gb of ram..)
never had an issue

Issue with Sogo is they closed it and just do nightly/dev releases. Will they close nightly as well?

When do we update? Daily? How stable is it (not just for us, but lots of users?).

I did like it but just not convinced of other factors.

Stefano,

SoGo is indeed one of those in mind, but John has enumerated the flaws.
Roundcube is an alternative with some plugins available.
There is also
- squirrelmail
- rainloop
- zimbra
- mailpile

squirrelmail very 'classic' and outdated (except devel version)
but rainloop looks nice, lite and easy to setup, 1.17 released Aug 31, 2022

I understand John's concerns.. for me, SOGo was (and will be) the choice, if we're talking about a groupware solution
but I'm not the community :-)

is zimbra available as a webmail app only? AFAIK is a complete mail server solutions
is roundcube still developed?

zimbra is indeed a stack

roundcube is  actively  and is currently having serious discussions with nextcloud

Roundcube web mail here.

We tend not to use any of the plug ins but like the 'clean' interface.

P.S. iredmail uses SOGo :-)

I think a key point here is making this 'pluggable'

ie like a contrib - it can be installed or removed and swapped without interfering with things?

If we use Roundcube (and seeing the potential tie in with Nextcloud it seems fairly logical) is it easy enough to use Sogo or a.n.other easily?

Snappy is interesting but seems a bit of a one man project? Seems to have various hooks to Nextcloud.

Simple, modern, lightweight & fast web-based email client.
The drastically upgraded & secured fork of RainLoop Webmail Community edition.
We thank the RainLoop Team for making a great PHP 5 product that was good in the past.
Up to date system requirements, snappy performance, simple installation and upgrade, no database required - all these make SnappyMail a good choice.

Our team uses Horde largely for shared calendaring purposes, via Thunderbird.  TB is our go-to email client, though I do use the Horde webmail to review admin emails.  When workstations have failed and users needed email access immediately, the webmail has been a good short-term backup solution.  All have been frustrated with the issues noted below, as well as some daylight savings time quirks where calendar events are mysteriously one hour in error.

Horde is good but not usable as groupware in production, current sme10 version has 2 issues.  1. Event reminders discarded if set to 0 minutes. 2. Event invitations organiser changes to recipient email address and resends invites to all attendees from new organiser email address.

Same here, the calendars are very useful. The webmail is mainly a fallback option, e.g. on a computer without a configured TB. Some users actually prefer the webmail over TB though.

The webmail also works very well on mobile devices.

Is nextcloud calendar would be a valid option?

I liked Nextcloud on SME 9, but decided against it on my SME 10 server.  Managing the Nextcloud updates was what I disliked, but I'd be willing to give it another try if the calendaring and addressbook (CalDAV/CardDAV) are more standards compliant than Horde.

can you elaborate more overt he update process ?
we tried to make it the more easy possible sticking to the way nextcloud handle it. They do not force the uprade and let you handle whenever you want to do it.
The process usually alrt you before you update if any app will stop working.

Apologies for my late response.  I should not have used the word upgrades; I agree that the Koozali team's implementation was well considered and allowed the user to determine if and when to upgrade.  I did have concerns with migrating the data to a newer version of SME and migrating data from very outdated versions of Nextcloud to current versions.  Probably laziness on my part, but it seemed too much trouble to keep up with Nextcloud's changes.

Appreciate the great stuff you guys do.  I'm sure that sentiment is not expressed often enough.

Curtis,
simply use the web update interface up to a 28 and you will be able to move to next SME 11.

Nextcloud is really well done in term of updates.

Sorry, very late to the party and sorry too for not reading all the entries before this. On my phone and I came looking for something else.

I didn't use horde much. Early on after install I'd install Roundcube as this was much nicer. Horde was the fallback option.
