So, before anyone chastises me, the user needs XP because of a legacy app that uses a Sentinel security key. There is no upgrade path or options to migrate the software. They need it for a couple of years yet for the legacy data.
I ran a large update that is causing XP to constantly ask for credentials when trying to connect to a share. There is nothing logged in MESSAGES or on the PC.
I reverted the e-smith-samba file that was updated, and restarted with the previous kernel. No change. So there must be another update(s?) that caused this. There were no updates to samba itself.
I'm tempted to run a "yum history rollback", but am fearful it will make matters worse, and I'll need to do a reinstall (which I may need to do anyway).
List of updates below. Hopefully somebody can point me to the culprit.
Thanks in advance.
James

Good morning.
If this is meant as a gentle reminder to set NT1 as the minimum protocol, then it was already set and had been running for some time. As was the settings for Lanman and ntlm passwords. If not, then I failed to get the nudge...?

Min and max maybe? Haven't used XP for years now.

Yup. Done that, too (verified after updates during troubleshooting).
Which brings me back to the updates having borked things...
Any other ideas? Anyone?? Bueller???
If it matters: This affected a bare metal XP machine (which had the security key) and VMs under Windows 7 (Win7 networking unaffected).

So, before anyone chastises me,
It's not you that's running it.... It's your client.
the user needs XP because of a legacy app that uses a Sentinel security key. There is no upgrade path or options to migrate the software.
Presumably there is a path but they don't want to pay for it.
They need it for a couple of years yet for the legacy data.
If it's just data why not copy it somewhere else off the XP box?
I presume they actually have machinery that still functions they don't want to upgrade? They won't be the first screwed over.
Either way most people don't even have an XP box to test with.
At a guess there's a change in e-smith-samba or the samba packages. You can check the release notes.
Possibly the fixes in 2.6.0-27
https://src.koozali.org/smeserver/smeserver-samba/src/branch/master/smeserver-samba.spec
But we don't know your prior versions so hard to tell. Could be a much older change, but either way we would not have tested against XP for obvious reasons.
You are largely on your own here (or at least they are).

I reverted to the prior version (e-smith-samba-2.6.0-26.el7.sme.noarch from 2.6.0.-28) and declared no joy. I'll check the update log Monday, but the 26 version has a date stamp of 2021...
The data is in a legacy database that is using a specific line-of-business application (hence the security key). The owner just passed away, so they're winding everything down. An update (even years ago) would have been too costly for the size of the business and the niche - especially with everything moving to subscription.
Thanks for chiming in, ReetP - and for the link.

Some diagnostic ideas -
1. Test from the workstation end
Do you have a workstation running a newer version of Windows, or even a non-critical workstation running WinXP?
If so, you could safely play with settings on that workstation to help figure out what changed on SME.
2. Test from the SME server end
Can you "stand up" a virtual SME server running an old version?
I had a problem after an upgrade a couple years ago which I tracked down by standing up an old version and comparing the template fragments under /etc/e-smith/templates and /etc/e-smith/tempaltes-custom between the two systems.
3. Research specific changes
If you can get a copy of the old e-smith-samba that your server was running, you can identify all the changed files as shown below, which may point you in a useful direction...
- My server is running e-smith-samba-2.6.0-28.el7.sme.noarch
- The smeos-10 repo contains e-smith-samba-2.6.0-26.el7.sme.noarch.rpm
I identified the changed files between these two versions like this:
# make a workspace...
mkdir tmp
cd tmp
# get the old rpm
wget http://mirror.pialasse.com/releases/10/smeos/x86_64/Packages/e-smith-samba-2.6.0-26.el7.sme.noarch.rpm
# extract the old rpm
mkdir e-smith-samba
cd e-smith-samba
rpm2cpio ../e-smith-samba-2.6.0-26.el7.sme.noarch.rpm |cpio -idmv
# use md5sum to list the changed files
# ("${x:1}" is $x from the 2nd char to the end...)
find . -type f |while read x; do old=$(md5sum "$x" |cut -d\ -f1); new=$(md5sum "${x:1}" |cut -d\ -f1); if [[ "$new" != "$old" ]]; then echo ${x:1}; fi; done
For 2.6.0-26 (above) this process identifies:
/etc/e-smith/events/actions/update-domain-group-maps
/home/e-smith/files/server-resources/regedit/win10samba.reg
For 2.6.0-23 on the SME 10.0 installer iso:
/etc/e-smith/events/actions/update-domain-group-maps
/etc/e-smith/events/actions/user-create-profiledir
/etc/e-smith/events/actions/user-delete-profiledir
/home/e-smith/files/server-resources/regedit/win10samba.reg
4. Compare your configuration settings to the new default settings
for svc in nmbd smb smbd masq; do
cd /etc/e-smith/db/configuration/defaults/$svc
printf "$(config show $svc |head -1)\t$(cat type)\n"
find . -type f ! -name type |while read s; do printf " ${s:2}\t$(config getprop $svc ${s:2})\t$(cat ${s})\n"; done
printf "\n"
done

5. Final Notes
While researching this I ran across some notes hinting that the syntax for ServerMinProtocol may have changed. You should review the settings you had previously for ServerMinProtocol and make sure they're actually making it into /etc/samba/smb.conf:
# grep protocol /etc/samba/smb.conf
client max protocol = SMB3
server max protocol = SMB3
client min protocol = SMB2
server min protocol = SMB2
-
Search for 'ServerMinProtocol'
Might give you some further clues
-
For those looking for closure, this was the culprit:
[global]
ntlm auth=yes
This isn't a db prop, but a templates-custom fragment that didn't make it back into the smb.conf file after the update. Took me a while to find it because I was too focused on the db props to check my own notes.
Popped it back into 10globals, expand-template, restart smb and all was right in the world...
Thanks to all who took an interest and tried to help. Especially mmccarn for going the extra mile!
