Hi:
I've been using e-smith for a long time at home with no difficulties, but I've never used it with a dial up connection before & I'm having some problems. I've got an external USR 56k on ttys0, and it wouldn't respond with the standard (blank) initialization string. I've played with it & it will dial out if I put a Z as the initialization string (the system seems to add the AT to whatever you put there) and I can hear the handshaking going on with the other modem, but each time it fails. I have tried it with two different ISPs. The messages log shows either:
chat[1566]: -- failed
chat[1566]: Failed (NO CARRIER)
or:
chat[1582]: CONNECT
chat[1582]: -- got it

diald[855]: Disconnected. Call duration 1 seconds.
diald[855]: IP transmitted 0 bytes and received 0 bytes.
diald[855]: Delaying 10 seconds before clear to dial.
I would think that PAP authentication failed means my password is incorrect, but I've triple checked it. Any help would be much appreciated!
Thanks,
Bobby
