Title: SME 5.1.2 keeps crashing at night-log help
Post by: Theo on October 03, 2002, 09:04:29 PM
I have done a recent install of an SME server and the freaking thing keeps crashing at night, while I am tucked safely in bed. If I cant stop this I will have to return to my NT box which is frankly frightening. I need some help interpretting log files and fixing this problem. I know my way around the file system. but not a whole lot more. Where should I look? I will post what I find. When it crashes I have to kill the power on the power supply as everything else wont respond.

Sounds like a hardware problem to me.
You can check the log files in the server manager

Which log file shall I look in? I cant find anything that says it has crashed. I found a 1 second long FTP session at 3am to an unknown host, thats about all that seemed unusual.

Look in /var/log/messages for the last entry of the evening.

If you have a tape drive, you might start there.
I would try to isolate anything else that only happens at night.

Check the bios to make sure the power saving features are disabled.
Disable any devices you aren't using...ie com ports/lpt ports/USB/etc.

Good Luck!!!
