Hi all,
I am hoping you can give me some descriptions on what I am doing wrong.
I have DSL and static IP address in my business. I got the dsl from verizon and then registered a DNS domain name with a registrar. I entered the A name of my server at the registrar, but it cannot be pinged even after three days of setup (they say 12-24 hours). I would like my machine to be the name server (is this possible?) and have the DSL provider as a secondary DNS.
I have not contacted the DSL provider yet since I didn't think I needed to. I thought I could create the A and C and MX records all on the registrar to point to my machine, but I can't. NO such thing. Do I maybe need another registrar?
Any advice would help. Thank xxx

Go here http://www.zonedit.com/ for the best freebie of your life and a full explanation of what you are doing wrong. Regstrars don't typically provide DNS management and that's what you need, but before you can get that, you need to have your registrar set up the new DNS servers you get from ZoneEdit. Its all there to read and they are really helpful folks, and like I said, your first 5 domains are FREE.

This is what you need... http://www.zonedit.com/doc/faq.html#faq2
How do I get started? What nameservers do I use?
Here's a simple step by step set of instructions on how to get started:
- you must buy or already own a domain name from a registrar
- sign up for the service using complete information
- you will get your password via email in about 1 hour
- log in to your account and click "add zones"
- enter the domain name that you want DNS services for and click "add"
- a pair of nameservers will be assigned to you
- contact your registrar and tell him to change the nameservers for your domain
- wait 3 days for the change to take place
