Title: email blackhole?? -- flooded with spam bounces
Post by: kyle coburn on October 22, 2002, 09:07:08 AM
I have a TON of spam going to a certain user that no longer exists on my server. So my server crunches away bouncing then getting a bounced bounce right back and filling my email box with the mailer-daemon "This is the qmail-send program at kylecoburn.com. I tried to deliver a bounce message to this address, but the bounce bounced!" crap. I just want all mail from this user to be deleted and disappear. How do I do this? Newbie form please...

I do not want to implement smtp rules to block spoofing spammers, i just want to take care of this one address.

Thank you for your time

Try Darrell May smtp checkrules

Author: Darrell May
Contributor:
Release supported: e-smith 4.x, SME 5.x
Last updated: February 15, 2002

Description: - the current default smtpdcheckrules settings permit
mail into the server if the domain name is correct.  This means mail is
permitted in even if the username is invalid or the user has been removed/deleted.
This may cause excessive bounce errors to the postmaster.

This rpm updates the smtpdcheckrules templates to block external
e-mail coming into the server to non-valid usernames.  Only mail to
valid usernames is accepted.

As an FYI, that RPM will not work on 5.5, as pre 5.5 uses Obtuse SMTPD, which uses smtp_check_rules.

Hope this helped,
Nathan

I think Darrell is working on an equivalent for 5.5

As another FYI, that contrib will prevent some other contribs from working correctly - e.g. the ezmlm list manager will not work correctly with Darrell's add-on installed.

Exactly.  This is a known and very frustrating problem.  As I've suggested before, why can't mail to unknown users simply be dropped as an option in the "Other E-mail Settings" panel of Server Manager???  This one item is preventing all of my clients from migrating off of SME5.1.2 and Darrell's contrib...
