You should find that squid is running as default. You need to configure the "client" machine to use the SME server. (See below)

1. Click on "My Computer"
2. Go to "Control Panel"
3. Go to "Internet Options"
4. Click on the "Connections" tab
5. Click on the "Lan Settings" button
6. Tick the box that says "use a proxy server for your lan"
7. In the address box enter the IP address of your SME server
8. In the port box enter 3128
9. Click the "OK" button
10. Click the "OK" button (Internet options)

Done!!

I hope this helps,
Rob.

But squid alone wont stop your son from getting into trouble, unless you setup squid authenication, I would suggest installing squidGuard, its easy to setup and will keep him outta trouble :-)

I downloaded Trevor Oullette's contrib rpm, which seems to have dissapeared, but there are a couple from Charels Brady that should work that you can download from here:

Here is a version of Trevor's package.

http://www.tech-geeks.org/servers/sme/v5.1.x/squidguard/install/

Read the 3.1 readme file and follow the directions.  Adds a server-manager panel and everything.  I don't believe Charlie's had a manager panel.

Hey Abe, I have 3.0 version of Trevor's package and noticed that there is a 3.1 version at the above site, whats the difference? And how do I go about uninstalling 3.0 if I want to upgrade?

Thanks

Hey,

There really isn't much difference.... no difference in operation, just file locations.

In 3.0, the files used in the web panel are located in /usr/local/squidguard.... (if I remember correctly).  In 3.1, the files were moved to /usr/local/squidGuard/www and has the updated e-smith templates to reflect the changes.

Just cleans up the filesystem a little.  If you don't care about that, then it's no big deal.  If you wanted to make the changes, just download the 3.1 tarball and extract.  Then copy the template files over your existing template files, and move the web directory do the correct place.  You should be able to take a look at the install.sh file and the directory structure of the tarball to figure out where everything goes.

Hope that helps.

No problem.  One of these days I'd like to work on adding some more features into the squidguard panel, but I don't know if I'll ever get around to it.
