Need some help/advice/ideas with installing SME 5.5 on this server I've had lying around.
Twin 1Ghz Xeon, 512Mb RAM, 5x36Gb hot-swap raid 5 scsi drives, ADR 50 tape drive and 1 Intel Pro 100 nic and 1x3Com Giga net card (3C996B-T).
2 areas of concern atm - first is the tape backup. claims to recognise tape on boot and tries to do a tape backup, scheduled, but reports the following
DUMP: dumping (Pass IV) [regular files]
buffer (writer): write of data failed: Input/output error
bytes to write=10240, bytes written=-1, total written 10K
gzip: stdout: Broken pipe
DUMP: Broken pipe
DUMP: The ENTIRE dump is aborted.
Do I need to source a driver for the tape or is it something simple I'm getting wrong?
2nd problem is the nic driver for the 3Com card - it needs compiled from their supplied code but I dont want to install the compilers unless I really have to. Is there any other way I can build the driver on another machine - <--spot the linux noobie?
Thanks in advance for any help.

If you don't want this box, you can send it to me :)
What type/model of tape drive are you using? What model of 3com card. I have used the 3c509, 3c90x, and haven't had any problems with them.

details on the hardware are in my first posting - see the machine spec line and NO YOU CANT HAVE MY SERVER - COST US NEAR 10k LAST SUMMER :-) I just never got entirely convinced about 2K Adv Server setup running on it so never rolled it out.

shucks. Missed the first part. I haven't tried a gig card in any of my servers.
Here is what I found. Go to
http://www.onstreamdata.com/support/trouble-01.html, then click to get the compatibility matrix. What I could see was that the ADR 50 needed kernel 2.4.0 or above. You may have to wait for e-smith 5.6 to use this drive.
Here is more info. http://www.onstreamdata.com/support/linux_install.shtml
That's all I'm good for.

thanks for that info on the tape drive. hadnt thought to check the manufacturer's web site - duh. Guess you're right then I need to wait on 5.6.
Ok anyone got any advice on the 3 Com net card then?

Have a look here, maybe it works:
ftp.suselinux.hu/suse/i386/update/8.0/kernel/certified_by_suse/2.4.18/
or
www.tux.org/pub/distributions/suse/i386/update/8.0/kernel/certified_by_suse/2.4.18/
You'll find a bcm5700.o
This should be what you need.
