Title: VPN to get to Novell server ?
Post by: miceni on November 21, 2002, 11:31:25 AM
Hi,
I use E-smith for firewall, web server, VPN connection, mail server...
I also have Novell 4.11 server (on IPX protocol), which I use for some old accounting application (DOS version, Btrieve database). Now, I would like to get access from Internet to Novell disk drive, via VPN. I can connect to e-smith and to my windows domain or workgroup, but I dont' know how to access Novell drive.
Is this possible ?

Any help would be very appretiated,

Regards, Miceni

Found this when I was looking for something else; I have absolutely *no idea* if it'll help you, but it's something.

A little bit more info, copied from the page:

"The Novel Client for Linux is an X Windows program which allows making NCP connections over IP or IPX to Novell Netware servers. Usage is intuitive since the interface looks quite familiar to users of the Novell Client for Windows. For screenshots, help, and requirements check the homepage. It can be downloaded in a self-extracting format with an easy setup script which is tailored for Redhat7.x / KDE though it may install fine on other distributions as well.

Run 'sh novelclient-0.7.4.bz2.sh' as root to start the setup.

I can be contacted via form-based email on SourceForge at http://sourceforge.net/sendmessage.php?touser=580583."

Perhaps there's a command-line component that can be used to mount a Novell volume so Samba can understand & share it.

Hi Michael,

I'm very thankfull for finding those sources. I took some time to find some informations, but I think there's some proble. I should compile this package with make, but there isn't any in e-smith. I also don't know if e-smith does have IPX support (probably not). And I assume that's prerequisite for installing NCPFS.
Or am I missing something ? I must admit, that I'm linux novice and still learning
:)

Miceni,

It's been many years since I my NT 4.0 classes, but I remember studying a 'novell gateway' service available on NT Server that allows Windows clients to access a Novell directory through the NT server.  If you still looking for an answer, I suggest you search looking for info pertaining to IPX/SPX and NWLink and Novell services in regards to NT 4 server.  This gateway service might allow your VPN TCP connection through SME to access a Novell server.

Good Luck,

Ryan
