i have just been trying to setup my e-smith to be a dns server. i am a linux newbie and the differences between e-smith and 'normal' linux is making it really difficult..
any simple answers? docs you can point me to?

I would recommend using an alternate box for your dns. E-Smith does not listen for public "Internet" DNS queries. I am sure you can configure it to do so, but the good folks at Mitel, and e-smith have disabled this for a reason. Security.
I would recommend using zoneedit.com for your dns. Free service, plus it is away from your network.
