Title: Virtual SubDomains
Post by: Tim Simpson on November 28, 2002, 01:13:41 AM
Hello,

Whilst I understand how to have virtual servers using apache, I am unclear as to how to set up the same using E-Smith (which I just installed today)

Basically I want to do the following

on one E-Smith server with one IP address I want to host the following websites

Say my domain is am-theatre.com,

then I would like to host virtual websites

www.am-theatre.com

club1.am-theatre.com

club2.am-theatre.com

club3.am-theatre.com

etc etc

Obviously my DNS records would have to provide aliases for all thes names against the actual name

Having read the docs it appears that unless I am not understanding something virtual domains have to be entirely different domain names.

Is this the case ? or can what I want be easily achieved

any advice gratefully received

TIA

Tim

It's simple.

First create the extra "ibays" you will need. (ie. club1 2 3 ect)  Then click on 'virtual domains" and create the new "sub-domains"  and then assign them to their respective "ibays".  If the SME is your DNS server it will already create the required DNS entries in bind.  Or you will have to update your DNS server with the new sub-domain names and the ip address of your SME server.

Have fun
