Though it's natural to wonder, it's just absurd to ask in these forums when Mitel will do anything. They will do what they will do when they will do it, and not a moment before. Mitel owes those who are not ServiceLink partners absolutely *nothing* but to honor its obligations under the GPL. Nowhere does that license compel them to give anybody any information whatsoever as to release dates and/or features.
So don't base production network decisions on Mitel's timetable unless you're a ServiceLink partner!
Beggars can't be choosers. Please note that this is spoken by a beggar, as a beggar ... I'm neither a partner nor a ServiceLink customer.
While I'm on the subject, seeing as it's Thanksgiving Day here in the USA -- all of us here should be in greater or lesser measure grateful that Mitel chooses to expend resources (server space, bandwidth, personnel time) to support these forums. Many thanks, gentlemen and ladies!

...and, just to be clear, not everything in SME 5.6 (or in any other version of SME/e-smith that I've looked at, which is all of them since 3.x) is GPL'd. qmail, for example, is under a different license that also allows for redistribution. Apache is also not under the GPL, nor is PHP.

OK i see ,don't free iso 5.6 in the E-smith FTP ?
Thanks

The community here do increase the user base considerably and give a lot of feedback to Mitel regarding software bugs etc, which they may not otherwise obtain (at least as quickly as they may do now).
-
yes.... give us a feedback sofware bugs on 5.6 beta and you must pay 5.6 Service Link.....good
-
Geez folks! How about you just be grateful that we get to use SME Server for free and we have a great community here to fall back on for customizing and tweeking the software to our liking. When it's time for 5.6 to be released you will be able to download it at that time. For now either pay up or shut up! You are either a contributor or a leech which do you choose to be.
-
Mike, I can't agree more!!!!
E-Smith is very high quality software and any one out there who is using it for free should be grateful that it is available. 5.6 will get here when it does and no sooner. There is no point in asking because no one apart from mitel know when they will have it out.
So everyone have a Merry Christmas and shut up about when E-Smith 5.6 will or wont be released!!!
-
Good ...
Pay and shut up ....you works for Krosoft $$$
-
So users of open source software are leeches? Interesting, why not post that one on Sourceforge?

"Free" software, in any of it's meanings, doesn't imply it's users are "leeches". As someone who has both written (mine GPL'd) and uses "free" (GPL & Open Source) software I take great exception, indeed offense, at that characterization.
E-Smith now Mitel built upon the gifts of others and in return shares the benefit which they received. The licenses which they received their code with and thus work under obligate them to make available much of their code. They have then, out of either pragmatism or respect, chosen to offer further resources like the phorums, mailing lists, addt'l software, etc.
A small piece of code (trivial, years ago) which I contributed is in the Red Hat code that SME uses. Does that make Red Hat a leech to me? Mitel a leech to them? You, Mike, a leech on them and therefore to me? No, we're all part of a larger community that benefits from the sharing.
Your "pay up or shut up" line is both wrong and profoundly ignorant of the premises of free software. Yes, it is tiresome when folks ask over and over when something will be released, but that doesn't mean that they can't be proud users (and further developers) of the software in question.

Peace & Love to everyone! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to the SME Users, Payers, Contributors and leeches!
