Title: Tomcat and SME

Gday all,

we are looking at getting a new Records Management system that is Java/XML based and can run on IIS/SqlServer/linux/Apache/MySQL etc and am wondering which road to take.

The linux solution seems the one I would like to follow but need to clarify that Tomcat or Resin will run on eSmith SME Servers.

Will they "out-of-the-box" or does it need to be compiled etc.

SME doesn't come with Tomcat "out-of-the-box", but where are good how-to's and precompiled packages for installing it. Its easy to install (following how-to) and it works great. Highly recomended :-)

thanks david,

one question:

It says on your HOW-TO that it's only a VERY basic install. I am not really sure of the requirements of the Records Management System. How basic an install is it ?

RE:  Tomcat, What I mean is that I have basically just given the steps to get Tomcat software installed.  I have not done anything in terms of adding extra functionality such a Transasction Manager, Messaging Service (www.exolab.org), no realm (database/LDAP) authentication of users, etc.  You will also want to check the server configuration, there are some things you are going to want to do lock down the Web App if it is going to be a "publicly" available system.

Please feel free to contact me at (dave@helmuth.net) if you have some specific questions.  I would be happy to help with the specifics of your implementation.

Most of those are usually distributed with the App that needs them though, so usually they are not needed during the "Server" install.  Usually they are added when you

General note:  I think you will find that SME/Tomcat is a VERY stable platform to deploy on!

If you would like a version that comes pre configured with java and a FULL J2EE server, you should look into YES Server.  it is available @ youresale.com.  it is based on SME Server 5.5.  it have very competitive prices from FREE to 3 payments of 99.95.  with a very SOHO friendly license.

You say that the YES server is based on SME Server 5.5. In what ways is it different?

I can't see details of your licensing on your website. What are the "SOHO friendly" licensing conditions?
