I have SME 5.1.2 installed at the moment while I download 5.5.
I am trying to use the PPTP connection to connect over our ADSL Router.
Client is windows 95 whitch I have updated to DUN 1.3, VPN update & Y2K updates.
When I connect to the internet with the DUN & modem I can connect to the PPTP server on the ADSL but only for about 6 seconds.
can any body help.
Below is the log from the SME server

"CTRL: GRE read or PTY write failed"
Does your router allow the GRE protocol to pass through to the server?
Also, you should install the DUN 1.4 update. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;285189

I dont think the problem is the router as I have tryed to connect over our LAN & I get the same results.
This is also the same on a win 98 machine with DUN 1.4
any other ideas

FWIW, you are not using RFC 1918-compliant internal addresses. You need to stick with:
10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255 (10/8 prefix)
172.16.0.0 - 172.31.255.255 (172.16/12 prefix)
192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255 (192.168/16 prefix)
You may be experiencing some routing confusion.

Unfortunatly our network has an RS6000 on it supplyed by XKO who want to charge us £789 to change the IP address on it.
It was originaly installed 8 years ago by Kerridge computers & if we make any alterations to it that fail to work then we get charged to put it right.
Do you think this could be causing the problem if so I will set up 3 or 4 pcs to test it on a standard IP address set.
Thanks

Actually, in comparing my log of successful PPTP connections to yours, it looks like your client is not provideing 128-bit encryption.
Right after MSCHAP-v2 peer authentication, my SME systems log:
Dec 13 02:01:52pppd[6643]: MPPE 128 bit, stateless compression enabled
Dec 13 02:01:52 gateway1 pppd[6643]: stateless MPPE enforced
then they continue on to "found interface for proxy arp"
I'd suggest you double check your DUN client and make sure it is running 128-bit encryption. W98 started out with 40-bit encryption, and won't work until it is forced up to 128. I've run into that problem before...

Problem now solved
Windows update dose not list a DUN 1.4 for win95/98 in smart update.
After searching for it & installing DUN 1.4 everything workes fine.
Thanks for your help
