I am running e-smith version 5.0 behind a linksys router in "server-only" mode. It is my understanding that the dynamic DNS updating functionality is disabled when running in this mode. I would like to enable it! My preference is to use Mitel's built in functionality rather than a 3rd party module.

Since I have a DYNDNS.ORG dymanic IP account I assume that a few tweaks to a conf file will be all it takes to enable this.

 Many Thanks,
 John

PS: Thanks Mitel! I would never have ventured into Linux if it was not for e-smith. And I installed my first RPM yesterday! I can't believe how small and fast everything is in the linux world. It is terrific!

I have no firsthand experience with DynDNS on SME, but I do recall a lot of posts here regarding it. Did you find anything relevant when you searched?

It may be a bit complicated, as the SME itself doesn't receive the external IP in your configuration, the router does. I think it has been done in the past, though they may have ended up using a separate update client.

Is there a specific reason you're not using the SME as your router? That would greatly simplify things...

Yeah I guess you raise a good point about the external IP. As to why not run the box as the router! I only had one PCI NIC handy when I started messing with e-smith and I have been too lazy to pop in another and relegate my router to a hub. Also, I did not know if I could get the port forwarding to work (those were the days when I knew jack squat about linux)

I think I may bite the bullet and actually upgrade to 5.5 while I am at it. Now I know how to do basic port forwarding. Messenger and Net Meeting are a real pain in the neck.

I use DYNDNS client DDCLIENT to solve this problem.
You can find it on dyndns.org site at download clients page

 It´s working for months now!

I am having the exactly same problem with getting the proper IP to be sent to DYNDNS for updating but with the help available here I'm 90% there. I recommend you use, even though you said you don't want to, IPCHECK at ipcheck.sourceforge.net. With a little reading, it is very well explained, I now get my SME box to send the proper IP to DynDns. Now the trick is to getting it to run as a cron job automatically even after a reboot.

I have played with Linux before but my experiences with SME server has taught me more in a short time than more general purpose distributions. This is just my experience though.

In that case get rid of the linksys router, and connect a second NIC directly to the cable or ADSL modem. Use e-smith is server/gateway mode, of course.

Version 5.0 is quite old now, and unmaintained. I'd recommend that you upgrade.
