Title: excess disk activity
Post by: Mark whittle on December 09, 2002, 06:31:50 AM
Have installed e-smith server 5.5 on a HP e60 server pentium II 400 with a 8Gb scii drive, the problem is that the disk is constantly being accessed, has anyone had the same problem, Iam thinking it may have something to do with the scii.

What makes you think this is a problem?

I thought disk trashing was not good for the drive, and shouldn't be happening when it is not connected to a network standing by itself, seems strange to me?

I have the same problem - a fairly recent installation with only two active users. I don't have SCSI though - I have two IDE drives in RAID mode. The hard disk light is on constantly despite the server being tasked to do squat?

I have the same problem in that about every 1-2 seconds I can hear a head seek. This wouldn't be a problem except I'm using IBM travelstar laptop drives and there is an issue using these constantly 24/7 (even IBM only recommends about 75-80% duty). There is not enough idle time to allow them to go to sleep.

Well I have only 124M usable from 128M (4M for onboard video) and swap "is" showing 1.8M in use. I guess I'll have to try to get another 128M stick and see what happens.
