Title: ISDN NT1 Plus II modem dont work
Post by: Adam on December 10, 2002, 01:59:22 AM
I have recently has an ISDN line put in with an external ISDN modem (NT1 Plus II) I can install the driver with windows xp and get it to work fine, bit i cannot get it to work with e-smith. I was under the impression that any external ISDN modem with a rs232 connection would work. If someone knows the trick. I would greatly appreciate a little advice. I really need this to work.
Thanks.

Hurray!!!!

Persistance beets resistance.

I finally got the bloody thing to go.
For everyone out there who is connected to Australia's Telstra ISDN using the above quoted modem and wants to know.
You must put this string!Z=9
And the modem currupts real easy. I must have tried this string a dozen times with no response. Turn off the computer. Turn off the modem. Unplug phone line. And plug it all back in. Restart the computer and away it goes.
If anyone out there wants to go for 128K out of the modem try putting after the
!Z=9!T0=0
This means always try to add second B channel
Thats all folks.

I assume that you have Telstra's On-Ramp Home highway installed which give you a NT1 Plus box. If you make a data call to Telstra Bigpond you will pay 30 cents an hour plus GST. If you call any other ISP you will pay $1:00 plus GST.

With this is mind you can use DOV (Data Over Voice) with On-Ramp Home Highway. If you are not sure what this is see http://www.traverse.com.au/general/dov.asp

Traverse Technologies also offer internal and external ISDN DOV modems which will enable you to call any ISP that supports DOV for the cost of a local phone call for as long as you like. I suggest that you get an external modem to use with E-Smith SME.

Craif

Adam,

I am just about to install  ISDN as I can't get ADSL yet. I assume you enter the string in the server configuration, not via the prompt.

Thanks for publishing the details of your efforts.

I am also trying to get the NT1 plusII working I have had it working to under windows, and would rather perfer to use it via the e-smith 5.5 server.
My question is ok you can get it working in 128 mode but the coms port with slow you down, my question is i have a usb card in the server and the NT1 plusII (isdn modem) for a better thing.
Now how will I get the server to add a usb modem to the list ie ttys0 to the ttyUSB0 for the first and only usb modem, this in turn will allow a true 128k link.
How do I make the usb modem work, I have talked to a person that has had it working on a linux box and told me to treat it like a modem, and then use a set of AT commands Q0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2      and from the posts I believe that !Z=9 !T0=0  are need aswell if this is so could some one please let me know.
The only real thing to ask is how to get 5.5 talking via the usb to the modem.

I am not sure about getting the USB to work. Though you should be able to connect serial at 128k. Granted that it may not perform quite as good as USB, i think you will be hard pressed to tell the difference.
You should only have to put !T0=0 after the !Z=9. So your string should look like this !Z=9!T0=0 no spaces.
There is some documentation that comes with the modem that will tell you what each string will do.
I have found the modem does not always overwrite the old values so you may have to turn it off and unplug the modem from the phone line for 10 - 20 seconds.
