Title: Can not even setup e-smith
Post by: Colin on May 10, 2000, 08:12:39 AM
After I type in proceed in the setup of e-smith the computer says initializing cd-rom then goes to a blue screen saying welcome to e-smith server and gateway and stays stuck there. The cd rom goes dead( I can not open it up) and I have tried another cd rom and the same thing happens. If anyone else has had this problem please tell me what the solution to it was. Thank You.

Geez, another guy who got teased in school!!!

But to the problem at hand, I never encountered this with e-smith but I have had a very similar problem with RedHat. It was caused by a dirty cd -- I cleaned it and the problem went away. Maybe that's what happened here. Aside from that, I would advise a look at the following:

1. bios settings

2. physical ram (maybe you have some flakey ram -- Linux can be     particular)

3. processor and clock settings.

here i,ve tried the 4b7 of e-smith distribution and got similar probs at first.  I got  "file not found"´s and other messages, tried a new CD (but never a new disk. shame on me) and distribution v3.01 also.. w/o any changes..

After all... i found out it was caused by a damaged floppy disc (some less defective sectory only, but enough to make me angry about). After using a brand new one i did install all with success.
