Title: Unexpected SMTP Reply Code
Post by: Bob MacDonald on December 19, 2002, 11:28:53 AM
Hi,

I have a client with e-smith 5.5 SME. Since moving to this version a number of email address are unreachable. The qmail-send program eventually sends the user a message to say that the message was undeliverable - the reason given is "Remote host said: 0".

Investigation shows that the remote mail servers in question indeed respond with a 0 first then the usual 220 greeting on the next line. This initial 0 is not received from mail servers that can be deliverd to successfully.

Is there a configuration option or patch that I am missing?

No. You should ask "postmaster" at one of these sites why their server is not correctly implementing the SMTP protocol.

BTW, there is no change in the mail delivery software (qmail) between 5.5 and earlier versions.
