Title: printing garbage on bigger files
Post by: John on December 26, 2002, 04:03:52 PM
Hi all, hope we all had a merry xmas!
I have a e-smith 5.1.2 server with win2000, XP workstations
the e-smith has a HP2100 printer attached to LPT1
workstations use LPT2 re-directed \server\hp2100
Now, with small 1-2 page text (doc) files they print ok, but as soon as I do
something bigger in size, it just prints garbage
anyone have any ideas why this might happen.
my work around at this moment is to put the printer on the workstation
and share it (it works fine), but this is not what I want.

cheers
John

At least to me appears a phisycal problem, maybe the cable.
If isn´t this try to change in BIOS from ECP+EPP to EPP or to ECP or even to simple!

I hope this help!

Agree, most HP printers work fine with ECP mode, I would stay away from EPP and either use ECP or Bi-Directional.

thank for the help Jader an Nathan, I will try that next week when they open back up (6th Jan)
and thx for the fast reply too, last time I posted something here I got no replies.
I think from memory I put it on SPP in the bios, but will play around with it.

Ok, I finally got to changing the printer port to ECP, and cable but still does it!
I also have an e-smith 5.1.2 at work that works well with a bubble jet printer

So I got a lend of an old HP series II laser printer an attached it at work
the same thing happens??????
it printed quite a few pages, then for some reason it ran the paper tray dry
with printing garbage.

I will be installing a print server unit next week to fix the problem , but still would like to know why its doing it.

Any more ideas guys?

cheers
John

Maybe your printer had some problems. Try it directly at Win2000 workstation!
Send the same BIG job from wkst directly to HP2100 . Later put it again in SME512 and send the same BIG job and compare results.
Or you´ll have problem at both situations (so it´s the printer), or just on SME (so it´s the parallel port of SME!)
Or could try put the other server bubble jet printer on problematic SME!

Hi Guys
Just letting you know I have the same problem with an HP2200 that is connected to an e-smith 5.5 server via ethernet and a jetdirect card.
Small jobs print fine - big jobs end up spewing out garbage.
Will let you know if I find a fix.
All the best,
Julian
