I need to know if this problem is by design or if I am missing something here. Here is the scenario:
From my Windows 98 machine at home, I login to my home based network with a username of "don". Now if I connect to my E-Smith 5.5 server at the office with the Microsoft VPN client using the username of "ddixon", I cannot see any shares on my E-Smith 5.5 server, instead is keeps popping up a password dialog and telling me my password is incorrect.
In contrast, if I login to my home network with the username of "ddixon" and connect to the VPN with username "ddixon", my shares will pop right up.
I am guessing this is due to the fact that there is no "don" user on the E-Smith 5.5 server and Windows 98 does not have the ability like NT, W2K, and XP of passing different username credentials to the server. Is this a correct assumption? If so, is there a way around this?
Also, since I am trying to convince my boss to use E-Smith 5.5 for VPN connections instead of Windows 2000 Server, would I be facing the very same obsticle if I were using Win2K Server?
Thanx for the help.
Don

One tip I can give you: put the IP address of the SME server into the remote client's VPN config under the WINS server setting. That will take care of one aspect of your scenario.

i think this has been asked somewhere in here before, search for vpn and youll come across it
make sure you have DUN 1.4 installed on the client
try configuring the vpn client settings to prompt for logon ?? make fix the problem
