Sirs
Attempting to kickstart my email and SMTP engine (SME 5.6 server only behind an external firewall). Believe I need to open some ports on the hardware firewall for this to occur but unsure what port numbers to use.
best wishes, Robert

Hi,
In order to get external email into your box you need to make sure that tcp port 25 (smtp) is open. In addition, if you want your users to be able to remotely get mail using pop3, then open port 110. If you want users to be able to browse imap mail folders, open port 143, and if you want them to be able to use Webmail, open up either port 80 (insecure webmail) or port 443 (secure version).
Note that when you open these ports on the firewall you will need to tell the firewall which machine to forward the ports to.
Hth.

Yes, that certainly helps:-)
The firewall's control panel is quite clear, if a little colourful with some of the main services highlighted. Only problem it's a bit too simplified, it doesn't show which port (actual number) is used for whatever service opened. Normally it probably wouldn't matter a damn but I have instigated a 'custom service' approach in the control panel and that method requires specific port numbers... hence my request.
Thank you, I'll start reconfiguring. I think Damien's Secure Email stuff is also going to be extremely useful too. Hopefully I can kickstart this thing into doing what I need it to do and then I can ditch my BTconnect AnyTimeWhoAreWeKidding account, as their subscription has recently arrived;~/

To assist anyone searching for a complete listing of the ports and stuff I found the following URL while trawling through the help notes of my hardware firewall (Watchguard SoHo)...
