Hi All,
I have installed SME 5.6 with a cable modem (Road Runner) and I can't connect to the internet, it fails the test and if I try to access the internet through a workstation it also fails. I have also got a SME 5.5 server that I use the same modem on and it connects every time! I have tried swapping over the nics and the internal network will work with either nic but Road Runner refuses to connect with either. If I plug the cable modem back into the SME 5.5 server it works fine. I have been through the configuration and both servers are set up exactly the same.
Any help would be grateful as I have only installed it on the second machine to check it out before I attempt to upgrade the good 5.5 server.
Once again thanks for all your help,
Derek

Often cable internet access is keyed to the MAC address of your NIC. Roadrunner doesn't do that where I live, but I've heard they do so in other areas. Try taking the NIC out of your 5.5 machine and installing it in your 5.6 machine; see if that works.

I must say Dan your on the ball!
I have tried what you said it works great. If I leave the cable modem unplugged from the mains overnight do you think it will work with one of the other nics?
Thanks again. I am still learning about SME but I have to say that the help that I have had from this forum is fantastic.
Cheers,
Derek

Well, with mine, it worked to just unplug it for a few minutes. However, if that doesn't work, you might need to call the cable company and tell them you have a new computer.

Thanks again.

Sometimes the cable modem "remembers" the NIC's MAC, and using the reset switch on the back will clear it. Around here you actually have to call customer service and have them change the MAC in their database...

I am in Central Florida, where are you?
