Title: Frontpage on 5.6 (How To?)
Post by: miracleman on March 02, 2003, 03:01:55 AM
First, I've been running 5.6 for a few weeks now! I love it. This is the best thing since sliced bread. I can just do about everything that I need to with it. No sweat. No hassle.

Except there is this one thing:

I've been trying to get Frontpage Extension to run on this thing. (First, I'm aware of all the security stuff. And I'm aware that bad designers can still design badly in Frontpage. And yeah, its a MS product.)

I searched high and low. I've done all sorts of things. Moved ports. Tried this and that. And I actually got it to almost work. But "almost work" isn't good enough. I hear rumors that someone has gotten it to really work. And the demand is pretty high as far as I can tell.

Perhaps some kind soul can lay it down and help a few people out. The criteria would be that none of the e-smith admin features get broken or does anything else. I believe that this is possible. After all Frontpage works on my Qube 3.

Thanks!

You need to install the RPM's and that will add Front page extensions to your primary. You will need to do a pico /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf and change any options marked as "AllowOverride None" to "Allow OverRide All" other wise the installation of the RPM's will not work.

You can download the front page server extensions at the following URL: http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnservext/html/fpovrw.asp?frame=true

This will not affect any administration features on the server. I actually have it up and running the front page 2000 server extensions.

Enjoy!

Thanks Major. I will give this a go and report back any issues that I find.

Well, I gave this a go. It seems there are no RPMs on MS site.

If anyone can supply more detailed info that would be hugely helpful.

You will need to download the tar.gz files and uncompress them using the tar -xvzf command.

You can go to http://officeupdate.microsoft.com/frontpage/WPP/SERK/ for instructions on installing them on unix platforms.

Thanks,

Thank Major.

It seems that the instructions are lacking a little for SME.

Everything went ok, except when you reboot the server. The Web server chokes. It's a good thing I had a backup.

I'm sure you didn't just install as Microsoft perscribes. If you have any details or hints as to what you did different, that would be helpful.

Thanks.

miracleman, i got good news for you! i found a rpm for both FrontPage Server Ext 2000 and 2002 in my harddrive. ill just find a server to put it there so that everybody could download it since MS is not providing it.

just see this later. maybe a few days. if i happen to forget about it, just email me. ok?

good day
