Title: windows xp and outbound email
Post by: Garry on March 07, 2003, 10:07:21 PM
We have upgraded some workstations from Windows NT to XP and no longer are able to send email from within the local network using MS Outlook. We were able to do so when on NT. The IP addresses are the same, as are the user id's and passwords. The user is able to POP in and retrieve their email, but get a relaying denied error (553) when they try to send to anyone whose email address is in a domain not on our server.

Samba is working just fine. This server is only acting as their web and email server.

The configuration of the server has not changed in any way.

ooops - workstations are behind a hardware firewall - when trying to send to mail.domain.com - of course they hit DNS and came back to the mail server using the public IP - and of course the SME server acted as though the workstation was not on the local network...

solution: change the outgoing SMTP server from mail.domain.com to the local IP - all better now - sorry to bother you folks.

Not sure if this has to do with this issue. Anyway: I have an XP client running Outlook 2002 SP-2 and have just started using SME as the mailserver for the primary domain on the server. When I do send/receive to mail.domain.dk I'm getting  "timed out" errors (0x8004210A). I restart Outlook a couple of times, do send/receive and all of a sudden its working!? Using a windows 2000 client running Outlook 2002 (exactly samme version) on the same network I'm not having any problems!? I searched for the error code using Google and it seems other people experience something like this aswell. Any ideas?

Had a similar problem and in the end it turned out to be the Norton Antivirus that was the problem.  I tried updating Norton to latest version but no difference in the end I turned off the option in Norton AV to scan incoming and outgoing email and then all was OK.

I've got the same problem. I've made it working for me with all the updates that are available for Windows (2K and XP).
