Title: Newbie: SME 5.6 Hylafax & rpm install
Post by: Nuke on March 15, 2003, 09:55:09 PM
Hi!

I learn by doing.  I have read the various Hylafax installation guides that some of you have graciously compiled.

Unfortunately, I'm a bit to inexperience to "get" what I presume is the obvious to you.

I started with Chaloner's instructions.  Downloaded the rpm's and tried to do the rpm -Uvh *.rpm  My problem started there.  There are a few rpm's missing.

So I tried the Sulman version and downloaded all the remaining list of rpms.  In this case, rpm -Uvh *.rpm gave numerous dependency errors.

I tried to install them in sequential order as per the Sulman instructions.  So far so good.

When I tried to install XFree86-xfs-4.2.0-8.i386.rpm I get the following dependency error.  The following directories do not exist. /usr/X11R6/bin/mkfontdir and /usr/bin/ttmkfdir

I presume I should create the directories.  I did that however I still get the error.

Could you tell me what I have done wrong?

The one directory doesn't seem to get created.  /usr/bin/ttmkfdir doesn't work for some reason.  I used the command mkdir /usr/bin/ttmkfdir

When I list the directory /usr/bin t* I get a list of files and at the bottom :ttmkfdir  This is unusual since the files and directories are usually listed together.

Could someone enlighten me to why this directory can't seem to be created?

Thanks in advance

well, I have finally gotten the Hylafax installed and it is sort of running.  I still don't understand anymore of the rpm usage and the man pages are still too cryptic for me.  I guess I need a dummies guide.

For anyone who is interested, you might look at using Darrel May's contribution to get hylafax running.  He has lumped all the rpms that are required and install how-to into a nice easy to use package.

Now to figure out why the fax modem doesn't answer with distinct ring.
