I have a home network and use the SME as just a file server. with 5.0 I could access the samba shares without putting a uername/pass in. I have done a clean install of SME 5.6 but when trying to access the server It comes up as //192.168.0.#/ipc$ and asking for a password on win9x and username/pss when access with WinNT/2000/XP. What I like to do is make the box being able to access from all puter with have to put a username/password  in.

Use the Mitel server-manager panel to install a new User. That new user should have the same username and password that you *should* be using elsewhere across your Windows boxes.

Also confirm (in the server-manager panel) that the workgroup's name is the same as for the rest of the Windows boxes. If that doesn't mean anything to you then you are probably still on the M$ default and so should change the Mitel default entry to read *workgroup*. The server should then come up in the Neighbourhood area on all the Windows boxes.

What I need is to be able to access to server without having to use a username/password. sorry typo's are a real pain

Have you tried an iBay that is opened right up? But without a common user defined I'm not sure how it would appear in the Neighbourhood...

BTW you only have to define the common user LAN-wide and make each workstation log on with that communal user, otherwise its pretty transparent. If you didn't want/need LAN security then just automate those workstations' log on with something like TweakUI. By choosing or trying not to go down the normal route you are putting yourself in the roughlands so to speak. Which is OK if you know how to work it but a PITA if you don't;~/

I not very good sometimes at getting want I want to say accross very well. I want a guest computer to be able to access the Ibays on the SME server

Is this guest computer on your LAN (intranet) or is it attempting to access your SME server from outside (internet)?

Having the exact same problem. I-Bays not accessible
without a password. This does not serve the purpose
as described in documentation as a public (local) file area.

This worked fine in 5.0 and after upgrade to 5.6 nothing.
The possible culprit is the smb.conf where in 5.0 it was

guest ok = yes

and in 5.6

guest ok = no

working on it now

I have found the way to make the SME server fully public

mkdir -p /etc/e-smith/templates-custom/etc/smb.conf

then you copy these file to /etc/e-smith/templates-custom/etc/smb.conf/

11guestAccount
11guestOk
11security

in 11guestOk change the no to yes
in 11security make sure the security = share

secuity = share and guest = ok
