Title: EMAIL - POP Problem
Post by: Lars on March 30, 2003, 11:55:04 PM
Hi!

I have just installed the SME-Server 5.6. All works great but E-mail retrieval is not really possible.

I read the article about mail retrieval in this forum, but I can't believe that there is not a better or more easy solution.

The problem:
Domain: www.xxxx.com
POP3: pop3.xxxx.com
Hostet on ISP abcd... with no separate IP for the xxxx.com-Domain! <---

I have to configure SME with the name xxxx.com-Domainname to deliver internal Mails correctly. Internal Mails work fine with this config.

And now the problem. If I want to acces the external Domain with the pop3-Mailbox it does't work.

How can I tell SME to collect the mails from the external domain??????

My workaround:
Forwarding all Mails to xxxx.com to yyyy.com.
But: Not all of my Domains can forward to another mailbox...or I do not have access to the ISP-config-section :-(

I hope there is an easy solution, telling SME access pop3.xxxx.com extern.

Hi Lars,

Are you trying to :
a) collect POP3 mails from multiple mailboxes hosted at the ISP

or

b) are all your mails at the ISP going to a single mailbox for collection and local distribution ?

If (b), SME has a mechanism called multi-drop mail to do just that however, the SME server must have the same domain name (either as the primary domain or as a virtual domain) as the mails you are trying to distribute locally.

If (a), search the forum for Vincent Filali and download then install his multi-pop fetchmail generator. It allows you to collect POP3 mail from up to 25 (or is it 50?) POP3 mailboxes per user ! This does not require your SME to have the same domain name.

If neither (a) or (b), post more info.

Hi Lars,
The Vincent Filali rpm can be found at http://lordsfam.net/downloads/production/sme-fetchmail
I installed this and it works great.
Hope this helps.

Hi!

It seems, the problem is solved...

I configured the fetchmail script in multi-drop-mode, without using the internal SME mail retrieval function. (All fields are empty in my configuration...)

I only configue one multi-drop-mailbox and every user gets an expression there... so the local-user "a" gets mail from the external pop3-mailbox a@xxx.com.
The local-domainname is yyy.com.

Now all works fine and I can use all features from this great server-software.

Many thanks to all! :-)
