Title: New RPM manager?
Post by: Andy on April 15, 2003, 02:05:00 PM
I downloaded the RPM manager at this address:
http://www.dungog.net/sme/files/devinfo-mitel-update-system-0.0.1-12.noarch.rpm

However, today I saw this file:
http://www.dungog.net/sme/files/devinfo-mitel-update-system-0.0.1-14.noarch.rpm

What is the difference? Is it a more recent version or am I just reaching:)

Today I upgraded to SME 5.6, and am interested to know if the RPM manager works with this version... On 5.5 it worked, but I had problems uninstalling the RPMs.

Andy
devinfo-mitel-update-system-0.0.1-14.noarch.rpm
is the newer rpm, generally you should use newer rather than older ones.

I'm pretty sure that somewhere on dungog site it says that the rpms are compatible with v5.6

see
http://www.dungog.net/sme/news.php
and
http://www.dungog.net/sme/sme56.php

To uninstal do
rpm -e devinfo-mitel-update-system
NOT
rpm -e devinfo-mitel-update-system-0.0.1-14.noarch.rpm

I just installed it on our 5.5U5. It has a few little options added, one of which is the ability to check against http://www.dungog.net/dungog-update.txt for updated RPMs.

Bill,

Does this addition of checking for updated rpm's include those held at contribs.org?

Bill,

So really we should be asking Stephen if he could add all the contribs that are on the contribs.org site, I might shoot an email off to him to request this, then he has basically created a "blades" type feature for the unsupported version!

I will report back when I get a responce from Stephen!

i could but maintaining it would be a drag

it's designed so someone else could setup another list at contribs
you can document the command needed to switch the address to look at

being able to look at two or more addresses would be even better
or a list of lists ...

Stephen,

Is there a way to add addresses on where it will look for updates when clicked? Then users could manually add in the addresses of where they downloaded their rpms from, assuming that those sites had a txt file setup, which it would be in their best interest to do so :-)

You might want to look at yum (http://www.linux.duke.edu/projects/yum/) which already supports lists of repositories, does automatic dependency resolution, etc.

Charlie,

I had a look at yum and it seems a bit much. Seeing as though Stephen has already implemented his "rpm update checker" into his very popular update-system rpm, all we really need to know is if we can add multiple sites to check and it will do a very basic job.

I do see that yum would probably do a more efficient job as it checks the headers, plus the tree structure of contribs.org would have to be changed so that all the rpm's live in one directory.

I asked Jeff (owner of contribs.org) what he though about it and got this reply:

Hi Cyrus,

It does look interesting.  We would be glad to host the site, but right now our we're not in a position to spend much time on the development.

If you and Stephen or someone else can get the srcipting running, I would be glad to put it up on contribs.

-jeff

So now all we really need to do is to ask Stephen to edit this part of his rpm so we can add in sites and create the txt file on contribs.org. The whenever a developer uploads to it, they could all have a txt file in their directory and they will have to keep it updated, that way it doesn't fall down to contribs.org maintaining the file, the developers are responsible for their own txt files that should have the filenames of the latest versions of their own rpm's?

It really does sound too simple. Also then we can add those developers who still have not moved their rpm's over from the ftp.e-smith.org contribs site. Basically then you could really included any developer on any site, just as long as he creates and maintains his txt file and you add it to the list to check.

So Stephen, what do you think, is it possible?

Thanks,

Cyrus Bharda

Well I got a reply from Stephen, and it seems it would cost around $200 for him to change the rpm, because of the time involved I would guess. Unfortunatly I can not afford this, so we'll just have to wait until it is done :-).

Waiting with anticipation,
