Title: file permissions
Post by: David Livanec on May 06, 2003, 04:36:22 AM
I have several files in the primary html directory that are chmod 666 and on reboot of the server change to 640. Any thoughts/help !

G'day David,

I had a similar problem with a little Mandrake box that I put together so that I could play with linux.  I don't play with my SME server because it runs like a clock so I don't fiddle.

In order to get file sharing with my windows box working I went in and changed permissions (with chmod) and latter they would change back on their own.

I eventually sourced the problem to a process called msec which was being called as a cron job every hour and it controlls the security level for linux as well as controlling permissions for files, folders etc.

Now for the bad news ... I cannot remember where the template for msec lives but if you hunt around you will find a config file that lists all your folders and the permissions they are supposed to have.  I altered this file for the folders I wanted to share and so far all has been well.

I hope this helps.

Cheers,
Andrew.
