How can I test SME-SERVER will not permit unauthenticated mail via SMTP on an intranet before placing it on the internet or is this set somehow by default. Also when using webmail I assume sent mail is authenticated via SME?

By default, SMTP connections are accepted from the internal network and denied for the external network. You can use Damien's SASL contrib at pagefault.org if you need authenticated SMTP externally. And yes, the user must be authenticated before they can send webmail also.

Mike, I would like to applaud your effort for checking first before placing an "unknown" machine on a public network. I wish more people had that mentality. If they did, there wouldn't be so many open relays.
