I have just started using Linux and came across SME 5.6. I have it running as the secondary computer in my network. The primary is a windows. I can ftp from the windows computer so that tells me its all working on the intranet level. I would like to access the server from my work computer on the internet and be able to ftp. Is that possible? I have road runner with a cable modem. I have the server set up as a gateway and server. Thank you for the help

you have to set ftp to 'public access' in the server-manager. The SME server must be the primary gateway on your lan, otherwise you have to portforward port 22 from your windows machine to the SME server
good luck

Mr. Wang,
Thank you for the reply. I was also wondering once I do the portforwarding what IP address (external) does my machine listen on. Again I have dhcp on and a cable modem. Do I need a static IP ?
Thank You

You can use a dynamic DNS service such as dyndns.org to alias a certain web address to your IP address. The SME Server can keep the alias up to date or there are Windows clients that will do it for you.

When you mean alias do you mean DNS Host. Sorry to ask so many questions. Also when I get a host how does the server attach its internal IP to the www address.
