I've had the e-smith 5.5 installed before, but removed it to check out a distro. After installing it again i have a problem with log-in from the internet with Winscp. All my settings are set to public allowing remote administration using ssh and with telnet off, and the server is set up in server only mode. As far as i can tell my settings are exactly the way they were the first time around. What am i doing wrong?

Could this be a firewall issue? At least I presume you have a firewall between the server and the internet? What is your network setup? What kind of error do you get?

Hi
Thanx for responding. It's not a firewall issue. I have allready tried to disable it. The message i get is simply "connection refused". My NAT is the same as the previous install.

It is a hard to say what exactly is going on I can only think of a few things:
1. Your firewall does not let the external connection attempt through.
2. Some how the communication between the firewall and the server doesn't work (presuming you have a seperate firewall and server).
3. The subnets on either side don't match so they can't see each other (though this would normally result in a 'no route to host' error).
4. The external box is not defined as part of a local network (in service manager).
If you have done all those things I can't really think of anything else without seeing the log files.
Hope this helps,
Kees

I looked at the options you mentioned, but i don't think anything except number four could apply to me. The server is a part of my private internal network. I tried to add it, but got the message that it was allready added. But for some reason it doesn't appear in the XP network menu like it did the last time i installed 5.5?????? That puzzles me.
my setup is this: a correctly NAT'ted cisco 677, a desktop pc running Mandrake and XP, and the E-smith running as server only. I currently do not have a firewall running for trouleshooting reasons (unless there's something running in the 677).

Ok, now I understand you setup ignore option 4, as your remote machine and e-smith will sit on the same subnet. I have to admit I am not sure what is going on, I can not see what is wrong.

If you have setup e-smith as server-only I don't think it is very save to run it without a firewall. I don't know the cisco at all, but I hope it does run a firewall otherwise your e-smith box is exposed to the whole internet and that is not a very comfortable idea. I use ipcop as my firewall, it is free and will run on very cheap (and old) hardware, might be worth considering, but that will not solve your problem (unless your box has been compromised, in which case rebuilding it would solve the problem).
Sorry I cannot be of any more help,

I got it! when one sets up xp and names the network, Windows adds a number of random characters to the networkname to make it unique. When i attempted to add the e-smith to my existing network, I included these extra characters when I typed in the name of my network in the server-manager. I redid the process, and now everything is cool. Thanks for the assist.
I only turned off the firewall to exclude it from the troubleshooting
process. Since it didn't change anything, it's back up. By the way, isn't there any firewall functionality in the e-smith when you run it as server only?

As far as I've been able to determine from posts and the user guide, nope!
