Title: IBAYs permissions
Post by: Stephen Kearon on September 16, 1999, 02:18:17 AM
I would like to see a greater selection of permission options:

For example
Ability to create groups and assign users to the group

In IBAYs allow write access to a group and read only access to a group.

In a school environment typically there is a demand for students in one class to have a shared folder in which they have read/write access

I am aware this can be done by changes to the smb.conf file, however this would be beyond most teachers (no insult intended!), while the web interface would not be.

Having downloaded the software over the weekend I am currently evaluating it for use in one of the local schools, so expect some more comments :-)

Hi Stephen,

Thanks for the great suggestions about permissions!  We agree that some elaboration of the permissions possibilities would be a good enhancement.

I liked your examples.  I'll go one by one.

1.   Ability to create groups and assign users to the group.

This is high on our priority list.

2.   In IBAYs allow write access to a group and read only access to a group.

Do you mean having two separate groups - One with write access and one with read-only access?  I wonder if you could just create an Ibay with a password that is only shared with the write-enabled group.  Your local network folks have read access to all ibays so that would work right now although it's a bit clunky.

Let me know if  I've mis-understood your intent as getting input on what people want helps keep us on target.

Stephen, I'd be interested in learning more about your school project.  We have a few other K-12 school-internet projects that have ordered our software and I'd be happy to forward your name along to them if you'd like.  Maybe you can collaborate.  :-)

Cheers!

Kim

Specially I am thinking of a Staff group and a Students group.

Passwords are an option, however they are not favoured as a student with good eyesight will easily get the password of a slow typing teacher!
