Title: ATTN Jon Blakely -- Jabber advice requested
Post by: Michael Smith on July 25, 2003, 02:36:27 AM
Your Jabber implementation for e-smith was as painless an install as I've ever done!  Wish I could say the same for the client side.  I'm trying to set up a complete no-brainer config for a LAN across a VPN (FreeS/WAN controlled by two SME boxes, of course!).  Ideally the machines would start up and zip right into one common groupchat.  I've downloaded & tried a bunch of clients ... PSI seemed good but I couldn't get it to talk to my e-smith Jabber server!  Exodus works great but is in my opinion too complex for my needs.  Various others I looked at are too cute, or even more complex, or too "alpha".

If it isn't simple, it won't get used.

Any help is appreciated!  Thank you.

Michael,

Did you take a look at Miranda?

http://www.miranda-im.org/

It supports the jabber protocol as wel as msn, icq etc.
It has a clean and simple interface which is skinnable.

Will try it onsite next time I'm there.  "Clean and simple" is fine; what I'm looking for is something that will make it dead easy for the users to start their computers and poof!  be connected to the groupchat.  Otherwise they probably won't bother to login and they won't find out how useful it will be once in place.

I don't mind doing some scripting or some playing with command switches in shortcuts.

Thanx for the recommendation!

I've been using Jabberwana for a few months now. Didn't have any problems setting it up or logging onto the server.

Thanks ... I've inquired on the Jabberwana forum as to command-line switches; will report here if I learn anything useful.

PSI looked very nice but I couldn't get it to connect to my e-smith/Jabber box!

Miranda has auto-login capabilities by ticking yes/no autologin.
