Hi everyone,
I am experiencing a problem with an upgrade I want to do.
My system has been upgrade a couple of times before.
It started life as a PII 266 and I took the H.D out and put it into a system with a AMD Duron 900 and all seemed to work ok. This was version 5.1 of SME.
I have since upgraded to 5.6 with update 4. Also using some extra packages like port forwarding, disk monitor, Web Monitor etc. Still everingthing is fine.
The other day tried to do a processor upgrade to an Athlon XP 2000+ which my m/board supports.
After this upgrade the system hangs usually within the first 10 minutes of operation. If I set the bios to 100Mhz bus the bios reports an athlon 1200 processor and all works ok but as soon as I up the frequency to 133Mhz the bios reports a athlon XP+ processor. I have run various hardware diags on the system and all say it is fine so I looks like it is software related to SME5.6.
Within the shell if I run "uname -m" I get the result "i686" which I'm not sure if this is correct. Think it should be "athlon" or something like that?
How do I reconfigure the SME 5.6 OS to be optimised for The Athlon XP processor and could this be the cause of my problems.

Rerun the instal from CD, but select upgrade rather than new instal. Then apply the update 4 again.
You might also want to look at the RedHat site to see if your hardware is supported by the version of RH in sme 5.6U4

Just a thought but is your power supply big enough to support the new processor at full speed? I had a similar problem which disappeared when I installed a bigger power supply.

Hi Nick, Thanks for the tip but have already replaced my supposed 250Watt PS with an expensive ($130) true380W PS and get the same results.
Anyone know why my system returns from "uname -m" i686 when has installed and athlon XP.

Hi Ray,
Will try this afternoon to do an upgrade reinstall. Only problem I have now is to identify what modules I have installed so I can reinstall after the upgrade.
Will post how I get on.

It works now!
Installed SME 5.6 as an upgrade to my system over the old SME5.6 installed and then applied update 4.
All seems to work fine now and am running my processor at 133Mhx and bios reports Athlon XP 2000+ and has been running for the past 4 hours without problems. Beofre would only go ten minutes. uname -m still reports the processor as i686 though. and uname -p reports "unknown". Anyone know hy this is as would have thought it should report the AMD athlon XP2000+ processor.
Thanks Ray for the Advise.

On my P133, uname-m reports i586 (OK) and uname-p also reports unknown.
Same on a P333, uname-m reports i686 (OK) and uname-p also reports unknown.
Must be an issue with the -p switch ??

Thans ay...yes I think you are right about the bug...I have another system which does exactly the same when using "uname".
