Hi All !
I have a fileserver with a 40 G. harddisk. I wish to make a backup to a second ( identical ) harddisk. Which files do I have to copy ? If I copy the /home/e-smith and sub's will that do ?
I wish to be able to make a fresh install and copy the necesary files from the second harddisk.
I tried the dd If =hda of=hdc but the system dies trying. (maybe heat ?)
I hope you understand my intentions.
regards Erland

You probably better backup /etc, /opt, /var, /root as well as /home depends how havily you've customized your server.
If its default install and you just need the user files and websites context back, then /home/e-smith is all you need. You will have to configure the server and all the addons after reinstallation.

Maybe this is an interesting option:

Did you bother to do a search in these forums for backup.
You will find so many posts.
You might also want to search for backup2ws.

Hi Ray !
I did search in the forums for backup, and got many hits. Most of the hits were about tapebackup or ( as you suggest ) backup to workstation. My wish is to make a backup on a second disk on the server.

Try reading some more of the search results, I'm sure there has been reference to that.
