Title: Backup2workstation slow
Post by: Mark Wilkinson on August 15, 2003, 09:26:48 AM
I have a client using backup2workstation which is working, however it is taking a very long time.  The backup is set to create file chunks for backup to CD-RW.  It is currently creating about 3 1/2 CDs, so it is just over 2 GBs.  The backup starts at 10pm and takes until about 9pm the next night to finish.  Any ideas?

Thank you.

What is the CPU speed, amount of RAM and hard drive speed & size in your server ? How much space used on th ehard drive ?
What is your LAN speed ?
What size HDD & how much space used on the backup share on the workstation ?

The most probable reason is the server CPU speed.
For me, on a P333 server w 256Mb it takes around 24hrs to backup 18 CD size chunks.

Appalingly slow on mine too. 256MB RAM, Dual 866, 10K SCSI, Intel 82559 fast Ethernet. Only backing up a small amount (700MB) Takes nearly an hour.

Hi Dave
Are you using rar compression?.

My backup is about 6 gig or so. It is rar compressed, and it takes about 7.5 hours to complete.

This is on a dual 900 P3 with a gig of ram.

I need to do a test restore (just being paranoid), and I wonder if it will take this long (or longer) to restore.

You do not have to do a full restore unless you are really paranoid. You should be able to open the rar file with winrar and verify the archive. If it opens in winrar you will be able to restore it later.

I just did a big restore with approx 12.7Gb in the split archive file (18 CD size 716700 Kb parts).
The restore took about 2 hrs from a Win2K P4 1.8GHz 512Mb 80Mb workstation to a sme server running on AMD 1.2GHz 128Mb 40Gb.

I have previously done a similar thing using a low end sme server instead P166 80Mb 40Gb and the restore took a day or two to complete (I forget now)

I have a problem with the backup to desktop not completing.  The backup/restore panel says the backup will be about 4GB, and twice now the backup has got as far as 3.99GB (according to windows explorer) which took a couple of hours and then goes no further even after leaving it over night.  I have tried with the workstation logged into the server and not logged into the server with the same outcome both times.

there is plenty of room on the workstation HDD.  Any suggestions?

Oh Marcus
This is an old issue that has been addressed so many times here in the forums. Do a search and you will find !

There is a 2Gb limit imposed by the interaction between smb and the backup compression and the browser (I think that's what it was). You need to have less stuff in the backup for the standard backup & restore to work

Alternatively you can use the backup2ws rpm from D May at contribs.org
You will still need to specify a 2 Gb limit though as the problem is to do with smb etc not your server or workstation file system. The backup2ws will split the backup into manageable 2Gb chunks or (whatever smaller size you specify eg CD size 716700Kb).

Watch out for restores as there is a bug in backup2ws, look for posts also about this, it does work but there is a little trick you need to do.

Thanks for your help Ray.

p.s. I had been searching and after reading many many posts this was the closest I could find...just realised that i was limiting my search to last 30 days, which may have left out relevant posts.
