Title: how to keep qmail from starting?
Post by: David trask on September 08, 2003, 06:38:17 PM
Hi all,

I know how to stop it, but I want to know how to keep if from starting.  I'm simply using this particular SME 5.6 box as a proxy server/gateway and dansguardian filter....I believe someone is using it as a relay for spam....I know how to stop qmail, but I want to disable it so it won't start on subsequent reboots.  What do I need to edit?  I tried the service panel from contribs, but it doesn't seem to stop the services.  Any ideas?

There is a user panel in the e-smith manager that allows you to keep services from starting.  I can't remember if it is an add-on or something that came with e-smith.

REPOST

If you want to check to see if somehow your system is being used for a relay there are several sites that can run a quick test to see if your system will allow relaying. One is or just run a google search for one.

Another good one is: http://www.ordb.org/

I have used it myself 3 times. Once when I installed SME 5.5 => Clean.
Second time after installing an AV package/MailGate and changing the default configuration => Open Relay!
Third time after getting rid of a particular dumb option => Clean. :-)
(It was my own fault and as soon as I reviewed the configuration that particular line jumped out at me).
