Title: Transparent Proxy on 5.6
Post by: Lazo on September 12, 2003, 07:59:27 PM
Hi fellows!!

I had installed a SME 5.6 server, and I want to use transaparent proxy. Some where in this forum I red that on 5.6 there is nothing to do to make it work. It is configured by default. I installed Service control, and I can see that transparent proxy is enable, but I try to browse the Internet, but no luck at all. If a set my browser to use the proxy server at 3128, It works without no problem.

Am I something missing?? some rpm, .tgz, /sbin/e-smith/db command??
something I have to edit??

Thanks for your help!!

Lazo

Put the IP address of your SME server in as your Primary DNS.

Thanks for your answer, but I allready do that!! I have an e-smith 5.0 as a gateway on transparent proxy and It works great!!, Now I tried it with a SME 5.6 but no luck!!

My DNS and gateway is SME 5.6, as my E-smith 5.0, I can see on var/log/message that transparent is on

I think DNS is working because I can ping my server by it's name, and I can resolve the name using ping

ping -a 10.52.83.3

making ping to MULTIMTY3 [10.52.3.3] . . . . . . . . .

Thanks!!

Is it possible that anything else on the network is advertising itself as a proxy and is confusing things?

I use 5.6 as transparent proxy without any problems, although I seem to remember (and I may be wrong) that I did have problems once when it wasn't the DHCP server.

The PCs were picking up DHCP elsewhere are (I think) also getting proxy info from the same source.  As this wasn't set up to get internet connection, then problems.

Not sure if this is at all related to you problem, though - but hope it might help

Thanks for your answer!!!

So you didn't do anything else, and the transparent proxy is set by default?? Is wired because, I do have an e-smith 5.0 as my gateway and dns server, and I set my SME 5.6 the same way!!

Oh well!! I'll set an IPCOP as my firewall, gateway and DNS server, and SME 5.6 u5 as a single server!!

Thanks all, for your help!!

Your server needs to be the gateway device for transparent proxy to work.

Thanks!! but I tried that. I set my SME 5.6 u5 in gateway mode. Set it to be my gateway, dns, transparent proxy! but no luck. If I set my browser to use the proxy (3128 port) it works with no problems, but I try to use the transparent mode, no luck at all!! I have an E-Smith 5.0 u4 server, as a gateway and I didn't have any problems, I tried to replace it wih SME 5.6 (with the same settings) but it didn't work!!

I have set my SME server as a server only, and IPCOP as my firewall, gateway, dns... I had some problems with IPCOP too, and figure it out that one nic didn't work (well, in linux, on winblows it did work), maybe that was my problem, but no time or another PC to figure out, maybe another time!!

Thanks for all your help!!
