Title: Macintosh user authentication
Post by: Ken on September 30, 2003, 09:02:48 AM
I have one Mac which I have tried to hook up to 6.03

Mac is running 8.6 operating system
uses appletalk 7.62

I see the server in appleshare but when trying to view ibays etc. I get the following message.

The user authentication method required by the server can't be found. Please check the appleshare folder in the extensions folder and try again.

Appleshare is on - what am I supposed to check ?

Thanks,

I am hardly an expert, but this might save you some thrashing. My thought is that MacOS 8 doesn't support SMB and I am not aware of AFP support in SME.

Hopefully someone has an alternate solution for you. FWIW, connecting with MacOS X is a breeze.

Never did find a method to access the SMC server still getting same error message

Still having to copy Windows files to a DOS formatted zip disk and carry it to the Mac and back.

Anyone have a solution?

Try upgrading you appletalk client to use
secure authentication from SME 5.5 and up you can no longer login using Clear Text Password (default in Mac OS 8.X)

You can find the upgrade here: ;-)

have you tried installing DAVE from thursby software. It supports SMB over IP. Also try updating the appleshare extension to 3.8.x or 3.9.1

SME 6 supports AFP. goto the chooser and click on appleshare then server IP address. enter the address and that should be ok.

otherwise updating to OS 9.2.2 could be the solution

Hi,

Has said Marianol, you can't access to Sme with Clear text password.
It's because Netatalk was build to disallow blank password connection. A mac computer connect to a sme server through netatalk which is appletalk compliant.

2 solutions :
- Create a user on Sme and connect via "network servers" to your SME, and enter a valid sme user/password in keychain (uh ... that's work on mac os 9.x and os X.3, i don't know abot 8.6). When you'll connect to your sme, you'll be prompt for your password.
- Get netatalk sources and build it with "SHADOW_PASSWORD" option.

I'll hope you'll understand my explanation. If not, i'll rewrite it in a better english
