how do i access the e-smith manager and password utility remotely? it seems that http://hostname/e-smith-manager, is only available locally.

The inability to access the e-smith manager from a remote location is actually a security feature. You will not be able to access it remotely unless you tell the e-smith box that the network you are connecting from should be treated as a local network.
You can do this under the local networks link from within the manager.
Just click on "Local Networks" and fill in the blanks.
CAUTION
If you share the network you connect from with others (as is the case with dialup and cable users) you will be giving permission to everyone who connects to that network. They will still need a password, but now you've opened up a huge hole.
If you don't have control of the network that you want to connect from remotely I would strongly advise you don't use this feature.
You may want to try Charlie's dialin RPM, you can find info at:
