I am a Linux newbie and I have been running e-smith manager beta v4.0 for a few months with no problem except for now.
The problem is: Lately (3 weeks) I have to reboot my machine up to several times to sustain a connection. The first few times I can access web pages, but after a few minutes I cannot connect to the same pages. Each time, I cannot access web pages, I access the “control console” on the gateway and run “Test Internet access” – The test failed !
I have spoke to support at Videotron . They do not officially support Linux. But since the signal from videotron was “strong” he suggested that it might be a configuration issue with Linux.
My configuration is below. Can anyone help me please?
Configuration:
I am using beta version 4 of e-smith server and gateway. It is setup as a gateway, connected to Videtron with a “Motorola Cyber Surf” wave cablemodem. The networked machines are Win95 & WIN98. I shutdown the gateway when not using it.
Ethernet settings:
Ethernet Driver 1 : 3c59x
Ethernet Driver 1 : 3c59x
Ethernet assignment : normal
External network settings
Operation mode : server and gateway – dedicated
DHCP Client : enabled (send system name as client id)
Dynamic DNS : do not use dynamic DNS service
Local network settings
Local IP address : 192.168.1.1
Local subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
DHCP server : disabled
Miscellaneous settings
Primary DNS server : 205.151.222.250
Secondary DNS server : 205.151.222.251
External Proxy : No

AHHH HA! Your isp appears to be using Dynamic IP assignment....??
You have DHCP enabled - but DYNAMIC DNS DISABLED.
Try enabling DYNAMIC DNS. Your isp may be changing your ip address on the fly.
The other settings appear to be fine. If the above does not work try swapping the nic's (in e-smith) and the cables on the nic's.

Your config is almost the same as my SDSL service - But I have static ip's.

Thanks for the response Orville.
Just a few questions about DYNAMIC DNS.
Do I have to register with one of the two DNS service recomended in the configuration menu, in order to use DYNAMIC DNS?
Can I use the CUSTOM DNS setting instead and what would be involved?
