Title: 6.0b3 hard disk led flashing
Post by: David Woolley on November 24, 2003, 09:09:23 AM
Hi.

Just installed 6.0b3 on a new machine Athlon900 Mhz as server & gateway.

When the system is idling, the hdd led is flashing in bursts maybe twice per second.  Same if I remove the network cable.

Is this normal?  Anything to worry about?  My v5.5 machines don't do this.

Thanks

David

David,

Presuming you have the server built with software raid1, give it 3 hours or so after install to build the raid array.

Thanks for that thought Jon.

I have only one hard disk and did not select software raid.

So I take it that hdd led pulsing is not normal behaviour.

I have only one nic installed.  Perhaps I should install a second and see if that changes matters.

Thanks for your thoughts,

David

David,

"Server & Gateway" with just one nic installed seems a bit "unnormal" to start with .-)
Else:
Start "top" and have a look at what processes are running when you see these "led flashes".
Look at the dmesg log file to check wether there is some substantial problem with your hardware. Look at the messages log to check for more.
"Some" flashing needs to be going on in a multiuser/multtask OS which is NEVER idle :-)

Good luck
